What is deforestation?<\/h2>\n

Deforestation<\/a> is the cutting down of trees and other plants in order to use the land for other uses.<\/span><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Every minute, an area the size of 30 football pitches<\/a> of the forest is cleared.<\/span><\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> What do you think will happen if this continues? Deforestation causes climate change<\/a>.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Trees absorb and store greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>When they are cut down, they release these harmful gases again.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Therefore, if we want to save the planet we need to save forests.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Forests are home to 80 percent of all the animals and plants that live on land.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>From tiny tree frogs and delicate flowers to lumbering elephants and powerful gorillas, they all call woodlands their home. It shows how important it is to preserve forests. What would happen to the plants and animals if we do nothing?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Forests cover more than 31 percent of the planet’s land area.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>This may seem like a lot, but consider that 10,000 years ago, trees covered 45 percent of the planet.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Most of these trees have been cut down recently, especially in the tropics.<\/span><\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Since the 1960s, half of the world\u2019s rainforests have been lost.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> If humans continue chopping it down, in 78 years all rainforests will be completely gone.<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>This would be terrible for us and the creatures we share our planet with. Rainforests are where more than 50 percent of all animals and plants on Earth live.<\/span><\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation.<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> As much as 80 percent of deforestation around the globe is a result of agriculture.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> This is typically because farmers are clearing land to grow food or crops or to graze cattle.<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Logging, mainly to produce paper and wood for us to use, causes about 14 percent of deforestation.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> To minimize deforestation from logging, we need to reduce how much wood and paper we use, reuse things when we can, and recycle products as much as possible.<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Can you find some things at home to recycle?<\/span><\/li>\n

Forests aren\u2019t just home to animals and plants.<\/a> Nearly 1.6 billion people also rely on forests for their livelihoods.<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> This means one in every four people needs woodland for their job and food.<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>Lots of people in poorer countries depend on wood as a fuel source too.<\/span><\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
  8. About 10 percent of the medicines we use originate in rainforests.<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
